“Print is not Dead!”- Vital stats of Printing Industry Worldwide

Johann Gutenberg is one of the most celebrated inventors in history because of Printing Press he invented. Printing Press has played a significant role in the transmission of knowledge and has changed the world since its invention. I have been a Printing Technology student and have heard many printing aspirants discussing the future of printing. Many people are concerned about the future of print, and their concern is very obvious too as eBooks are replacing printed books, Posters and Flyers are being replaced by online advertisements and no one cares about sending postal mail.

Is the Print Really Dead? The answer is “No“. Print is neither dead nor dying in near future. As the matter of fact is that the printing industry is going through a transformation. However, it would not be wrong to say that the Printing industry is facing some challenges because of Digitalization but on the other end, it’s Digitalization that is improving the quality of print and printing technology.

Why Print will stay around a long?

Packaging is always there to support Printing

Packaging is something that will never go away. Even God is interested in the packaging (consider some natural packages like coconut). You can’t tell what is inside the package without the printed label on it. So the packaging is a strong factor driving printing sales increases.

When it comes to eBooks vs Printed books, Printed books win

Reading a book on a digital device is like eating the same food again and again on the same white plate. Printed books have physical beauty, smell, and feel that help capture information for a longer time in the memory. Read this article to understand the things and fundamental qualities eBooks can never serve. People found printed books more engaging.  Many publishers have decided to go with a combination of both digital and printed.

Print marketing vs digital marketing: Most prefer print advertising

People don’t trust online ad banners they see. They are afraid of getting viruses and spam from adverts. On the other side, most people prefer print advertising. To get the most out of advertisement, small businesses are going with a combination of print and digital marketing. Thus printed advertisements are still getting attention and playing a key role in increasing sales.

Print is not limited to Paper alone

The stuff one can print is not just limited to paper only. Printing covers a number of materials such as Glass, Wood, Plastic, stones, Cloth, Acrylic boards, Mugs, and every other thing you wish to have your signature/logo on.

With 3D printing, we are able to create Automobile accessories, Smartphone covers, Medical equipment, Artificial organs, and Aerospace related stuff. Printing really works beyond paper products.

Print is green! E-waste stats are dreadful

For those who don’t know what E-waste is, Electronic waste is discarded stuff that has any electronic component such as discarded mobile. People often think that printing paper is the biggest reason for destroying trees. According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-

  • Only 12.5% of e-waste is currently recycled.
  • Recycling 1 million laptops saves energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 U.S. homes in a year.
  • E-waste is still the fastest growing municipal waste stream in America, according to the EPA.

It takes 530 lbs of fossil fuel, 48 lbs of chemicals, and 1.5 tons of water to manufacture one computer and monitor according to Electronics TakeBack Coalition, A Project of the Tides Center. E-waste is thus a real danger to the nature and environment. The print is green.
