Here are some frequently asked questions with answers that might come to mind when you listen to the word “transcription.”

What is Transcription?

Transcription is the process of listening to a recording(audio/video) and typing what you hear in a document. In simple words, transcription is the conversion of an audio file into text. Some common types of cases where transcription is required are recorded speeches, seminars, events, court proceedings, and medical transcriptions.

What Does a Transcriber Do?

A transcriber watches a video or listens to an audio recording of a conversation, such as an interview, and then types up the exact words that were said on the recording onto a document. The final document (a written record of what was on video or audio) is sent to the client. You only need to convert speech to text; the rest is handled by the online transcription company you work for.

What Skills Do You Need to Become a Transcriptionist?

You must have a great knowledge of Language, Grammar, and Punctuation. Fast typing and good knowledge of computer software used in transcription will be an additional help. Your patience, multitasking nature (listening and typing at the same time), and attentive listening would take you to the next level.

How Much Can a Transcriber Make in a Month?

Well, it depends on a lot of factors, like the type of transcription job you do, your typing skills, the time you can spend, the difficulty level of recording, and many more. Medical and legal Transcriptions pay more than general transcriptions.

If you are proofreading and reviewing along with transcribing, you can make much more money. On average, one can make about $10 per hour and $200-$300 per month doing transcription jobs.

What Tools Do You Need to Get Started as a Transcriptionist?

Most of the time, you need a computer with a good internet connection and headphones. Some transcription job sites also ask for Foot Pedal and Transcription Software.

Is Transcription an Easy Job?

No, it’s not easy especially if you have no prior experience. Sometimes you get very poor-quality audio/video and it becomes really hard to figure out what is being said in the recording.
